Being stuck in the middle of the road from a car breakdown is a nightmare that can throw a spanner in our hectic everyday life.  Pomen Autodata Sdn Bhd (Pomen), which claims to be Malaysia’s leading automotive maintenance platform, offers 24/7 assistance for Malaysian drivers, connecting them to an ecosystem of registered workshops through its app. The perfect solution to help book or make reservations with the nearest workshop, Pomen introduced the service in 2019. The app takes its name from the Bahasa Malaysia slang used for “foreman”. To date, the app has been downloaded over 25,000 times with an average growth increase of 10% per month. Although the Covid-19 pandemic and the resulting MCO brought a new set of challenges to businesses, Pomen sees the situation as a stepping stone to develop its business further. “We found that after the first MCO in March 2020, downloads of our app increased by 50%. Many car owners have taken the opportunity to perform services such as changing batteries and engine oil at home when the car is unutilised. While all users have to register their details to use the app, members need to register their car details as well. This helps Pomen monitor for fraud and unfair pricing. To date, there are more than 600 workshops registered in the app located around the Klang Valley, Johor, Penang, as well as in other major cities. Among the services offered include vehicle service, battery replacement or jump-start, tire replacement as well as repairing damage from accidents. Congratulations to POMEN who received an RM500,000 grant last week from Teraju Superb 2020. The SUPERB programme or formerly known as the Bumiputera Start-Up Entrepreneur Scheme known is a competition-based business pitching programme that raises new and imaginatibe business concepts as a competition theme. The key objectives of this initiative set up are to recognise competitive Bumiputera start-up entrepreneurs who bring creative and innovative methods to the development of their goods and enterprises. SUPERB has succesfully created 183 Bumiputera start-up entrereneurs and has helped to realise their business ventures at a higher level since SUPERB was launched in 2014.

PETRONAS FutureTech, an accelerator programme to encourage local innovations and support Malaysian startups, held its first Demo Day with 19 startups from the energy, industry, and digital innovation sectors recently. The programme under the PETRONAS Corporate Venture Capital (CVC) arm aims to discover and nurture local technology entrepreneurs and contribute to a tech-driven startup ecosystem for Malaysia. The first batch of startups pitched their business solutions to an audience of venture capitalists, top executives from Malaysian Government Agencies and GLCs, and other members of the Malaysian and regional startup ecosystem. Out of the batch, three startups were selected to take part in a two-week global immersion programme hosted by 500 Startups in San Francisco in early 2020. The startups are POMEN, an automotive aftermarket platform that connects car and motorcycle owners with nearby workshops and mechanics, GA Alliance, a platform that brings together financial professional expertise with digital solutions to transform accounting and AdEasy, a platform for offline ad space.
